The Beatles Top 60 Solo Songs: #42: “My Brave Face”- Paul McCartney. After his Press To Play album in 1986 flopped commercially- Paul decided to work a lot harder on the follow up- and did something that for him was drastic. Since The Beatles break up -let’s face it he surrounded himself with less superior figures to work with musically. For what became Flowers In the Dirt- he brought in Elvis Costello to write songs with. Four of those songs would appear on Flowers In The Dirt. Where Paul blew it is by not including more of what they did together on that album. Paul does not play well unless he has total control I reckon, reportedly the sessions with Costello were rocky with Paul giving Elvis the treatment he gave George Harrison in the later Beatle years. Anyway. The lead off track on the album- “My Brave Face” was released as a single and deserved a better fate than #25 in the Billboard Hot 100- but times had changed in the music business and Paul’s days of big hits were over.

  1. I wish Paul would see…a more edgier partner works at times. Elvis was a great partner for him.
I’ve always wanted to see a McCartney/Neil Young song or two.
