The first of 28 #1 hits in 1977. Looking at the list for the year- much better than 1975 and 1976. Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr- a husband/wife duo- were a part of The 5th Dimension in the late 60’s and into the 70’s. In 1975 McCoo and Davis left to become duo. Their first single from their debut album barely cracked the Hot 100 but it was their second release “You Don’t Have To Be A Star”- that became their big hit- becoming the first new #1 hit of 1977. They only had one more pop hit- the follow up single “Your Love” but that was enough to get the duo a summer television show in 1977. McCoo would go on to co-host Solid Gold from 1981-84 which is the only reason I watched the show- who was the other co-host? “You Don’t Have To Be A Star [ To Be In My Show} won them a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a group or duo with Vocals. Legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson plays bass on this one.
