CIVIL WAR 160: SATURDAY DECEMBER 8, 1860: SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY HOWELL COBB RESIGNS

Civil War 160: Saturday December 8, 1860 Secretary Of The Treasury Howell Cobb resigns. This was the first break in President Buchanan’s cabinet. Cobb who was from Georgia had been a strong unionist but had come to believe that the election of the Republican Abraham Lincoln had justified secession. Cobb would be replaced by Philip Thomas of Maryland. It would be under Howell Cobb’s guidance as president of the seceded states that delegates drafted a constitution for the new Confederacy. Cobb would serve in the war- eventually becoming a brigadier general in 1862.
