Girls! Girls! Girls!- “Little Martha”- Allman Brothers Band. “Little Martha” is an instrumental was written by Duane Allman and recorded a few weeks before he was killed in a motorcycle accident in October 1971. Duane and Dickey Betts played the tune on 6 string guitars using open E tuning. The story goes that Allman had a dream where Jimi Hendrix showed him the melody of the tune in a Holiday Inn motel bathroom, using the sink faucet as a guitar fretboard. Little Martha was envisioned by Allman as an ode to his then-girlfriend Dixie Meadows. He had given her the pet name of Martha because of the vintage clothing she sometimes wore – Duane saying “you look like Martha Washington.” “Little Martha” appears on The Allman Brothers Band’s Eat A Peach album released in 1972. The guitarist Leo Kottke once called ‘Little Martha” the most perfect guitar song ever written.

  1. It’s a peach of a song. Leo Kotke was no slouch on the guitar so his saying that is high praise. Actually sounds like one he would play. Am enjoying this Girls! Girls! Girls! feature ❤
