I had two and only two soundtracks that were contenders for this pick, but I couldn’t decide. It was the eve of the scheduled posting of my selection, and a decision had to be made. I picked Animal House. I’m at a loss as to what to write about the songs on an album that all or nearly all of the draft participants likely know by heart. So I’ll start by sampling a lesser played potentially forgotten track–the one where John Belushi destroys a guy’s guitar. “I gave my love a chicken, that had no bone…”

I’ve got numerous faint memories of dancing and having fun to the songs on this soundtrack. It was THE party soundtrack for a generation or more. I can’t summon any one particular personal party memory that’s worth telling, and not too embarrassing. But back around 1982, I did win a radio trivia contest because I had the Animal House album. The question was ‘Who wrote the Animal House theme song? The answer is Stephen Bishop. I grabbed my album, looked at the song and was the first caller with the correct answer; and for that I won a copy of Loverboy’s ‘Get Lucky’ album.

The album tracks:
Faber College Theme
Louie Louie
Twistin’ the Night Away
Tossin’ and Turnin’
Shama Lama Ding Dong
Hey Paula
Animal House
Intro (The Riddle Song)
Money (That’s What I Want)
Let’s Dance
Dream Girl
(What a) Wonderful World
Shout
Faber College Theme

Most of these songs were well-established classics before the movie came out. But Animal House made them classics all over again for future generations. I’m referring in particular to: Louie Louie, Twistin’ the Night Away, Tossin’ and Turnin’, Shama Lama Ding Dong, and Shout.

Louie Louie’ is a sing-along even when you don’t know the words. You sing along anyway, mumbling made-up nonsense words.

Shout’ inspired a new set of er, dance moves.

So, with my soundtrack pick, I’ve made my desert island the drinking, partying, getting kicked out of college island.

  1. Animal House is one of the funniest movies ever made. I remember how high I was going to the movie theater to seeing it — then going back high a few days later to see it again. Can’t tell you the # of times I’ve watched it but many many. The songs in it feel like old friends. Excellent choice, Diana and very cool you won a radio contest using trivia from it.

    • Thanks! I agree about it being one of the funniest movies ever. I think the movie set a new standard for a generation of comedy. As for the soundtrack, I’m at a loss to think of any other soundtrack that has been such a staple at parties.

  2. It’s so imbedded in my mind that anytime I hear any of these songs I immediately think of this great movie…

The movie is one of my favorite comedies ever…I’ve watched it at least 10 times and it’s still great.
