SUN SOUNDS: “LONELY WEEKEND”- CHARLIE RICH

Charlie Rich - Lonely Weekends - Reviews - Album of The Year

Sun Sounds: “Lonely Weekend”- Charlie Rich. Charlie Rich became a session man at Sun in 1958- a great piano player- and he also wrote songs that were recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and others at Sun. He was too good for his own good as far as talent went- in his heart he was a jazz musician and his first few singles Sam Phillips felt were ‘too jazzy”- to be commercial. In 1960 Charlie Rich had his biggest success while at Sun with “Lonely Weekends” which hit the Top 30. It wouldn’t be until over a decade later that Charlie Rich would hit it big- with the famed country producer Billy Sherrill [ who would later produce Elvis Costello’s country album}
