Sun Sounds- “Cry! Cry! Cry!”- Johnny Cash. After coming home from the U.S. Air Force in 1954- Sun Records signed Johnny Cash to a contract. He came in with “Hey Porter” but Sam Phillips and company at Sun were not excited about that song. They told him to go home and come back with a song that Sam Phillips could sell. The very next day he came in with “Cry! Cry! Cry! and played it for Sam Phillips. They recorded it and put “Hey Porter” on the b-side. On the recording Johnny was backed by the Tennessee Two- Luther Perkins on guitar and Marshall Grant on bass. The single went to #14 on the best sellers chart- sold 100,000 copies in the south, got him a spot on the Louisiana Hayride Tour- and the career of J.R. Cash was underway!
Sounds great. BTW, cool idea to feature Sun recordings. Quite a legendary place!
Thanks.. wouldn’t it have been great to have been a fly on the wall back there in the 1950’s?
I read that as Sun City and thought, “Wow. I never knew Johnny Cash was all up in the Mandela stuff too!”
and Johnny was with it back in the 50’s- ahead of everyone else!
I have this great Sun compilation album. maybe a choice for the island.
