Another one of those #1 hits that had opposition from someone as far as having it released as a single. In this case it was the artist- Elton John felt that the track from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road- would fail as a single. Elton turned out to be wrong. It was the second of six #1’s Elton would have in the 70’s.

  1. The entirety of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is brilliant, but I do agree with John’s own assessment. “Bennie and the Jets” succeeded almost in spite of itself, IMO; there are far stronger tracks on the album.

    Still, when you have a work as stellar as that album, it really is hard to make a wrong step.

  2. Fantastic single from one of the best albums of the whole decade. At the time in ’74 it was my favorite song, period. Later on, others surpassed it including a few others off the same album…but it’s still a song I like both to listen to and remind me of the better times of my childhood too.
