Hans Remembers- Wednesday September 9, 1970- 50 Years Ago.
- The King- Elvis Presley began his first concert tour in a dozen years opening in Phoenix, Arizona- he would stage 30 additional tours afterward until his death in 1977.
- A Cambodian Army amphibious force of 1500 men, acting without support from foreign troops broke the siege of Kompong Thom after three months, driving out North Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge forces. The scarcity of food in the provincial capital had reached the point that the city’s defenders ate some of the city zoo’s animals.
- Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended former star pitcher Denny McLain for carrying a gun and other infractions. McLain who was the last pitcher to win 30 games in a season- winning 31 in 1968-and a two times Cy Young Award winner- in 1968 and 1969- would pitch his final game in 1972- at the young age of 28. He had nothing left in his arm by that time- a lot of innings pitched and a lot of off the field issues.
