How was this great song not a big hit? Joni like many great artists were great because they did their own thing- not following the latest trends. Born Roberta Joan Anderson in 1943- in Fort McLeod, Alberta, Canada. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. From 1970-85 she had 10 Hot 100 singles with 4 making the Top 40. He biggest hit was “Help Me” #7 in 1974.
Did the other version undercut this one? I didn’t know if they waited until later or at the same time as was the practice in those days. Both were in 1970 I believe.
They were both from the summer of 1970- feels odd that the Mitchell original wasn’t the hit..
I certainly like her version better because it wasn’t as slick…it was more honest
Fine tune with a good message. Didn’ t like Counting Crows version much though.
Maire Brennan, of Clannad fame, also covered this tune. I think it’s a brilliant song.
I don’t remember who did the cover of the song? “Paved paradise and put up a parking lot” has become part of my lexicon as it fits so many situations where “development” takes precedence over any and everything. I know that there were two versions of B side and forgot who did the cover version. Unreal that neither of these hit it big as they are part of the fabric of our musical culture!
Didnt Bob sing this on one of your “Bob reviews”?
Yes Bob covered this on his Self Portrait album!
