James Brown- The Godfather of Soul, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business- had 5 Hot 100 singles in 1970 with 4 making the Top 40. This was his biggest hit that year. Rolling Stone ranks it at #351 in their 500 Greatest Songs ever list. Incredibly James Brown never had a #1 Pop hit.
To me, “Sex Machine” perhaps is the ultimate funk tune – nobody did it better than Mr. Dynamite, the hardest-working man in show biz. James Brown also got the moves – almost like an early Michael Jackson.
He had a ton of hits- but never a #1.
It’s a pity he never topped the Billboard 100. He had several no. 1 hits on the R&B chart.
Looks like be came closest with “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, which peaked at no. 3. That really should have been a no. 1 on the Hot 100, just like was on the R&B chart. The same should have been the case for classics like “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”, IMHO!
I agree those were three fantastic songs. It is also rare to hear JB on the radio.
