This single which went to #1- came about on stage- Randy Bachman was playing notes while tuning his guitar after replacing a broken string- and came up with the riff. It turned into a jam session with the band improvising the lyrics. The lyrics have been a subject of debate- some believing it was about American politics. Burton Cummings who wrote the lyrics decades later said “What was on my mind was that girls in the States seemed to get older quicker than our girls and that made them, well, dangerous. When I said ‘American woman, stay away from me,’ I really meant ‘Canadian woman, I prefer you.’ It was all a happy accident.” Bachman would also call it an anti-war protest song. In the summer of 1970 The Guess Who would play at the Nixon White House- First Lady Pat Nixon requested that the band not play “American Woman” since it was perceived as being anti- American.

After having a hit in 1965 with “Shakin’ All Over” #22- The Guess Who didn’t have another hit in the US until 1969- from 1969-74 they would have 12 more Top 40 hits- with “American Woman” being the only one to reach the #1 position. The b-side “No Sugar Tonight” would also make the charts.  Randy Bachman would leave the group in 1970 to form Bachman- Turner Overdrive.

    • Have the players union agreed? I hope they play I think the time is running short as far as agreeing/ getting it going. A lot of questions -what is going to happen when a team gets hit with 3-4 Covid-19 cases? Do you think the season will start- and have a finish with a World Series?

    • The players rejected the last offer and the owners came back with this…”“In view of this rejection, the MLB Clubs have unanimously voted to proceed with the 2020 season under the terms of the March 26th Agreement. The provisions listed above will not be operative.”

Hans they could have agreed to this a month ago…If 3-4 people get it on one team…I can’t see them continuing…can you? I have a bad feeling it could very well be stopped again including all of us if another big outbreak happens.

    • I agree with both your points- they could be playing ball right now— and yes a couple guys get it and there will be a shutdown. I have a hunch there will be nothing going on until there is a vaccine- in all team sports.

    • Yea the world won’t go back to anything near what we had until the vaccine. In football and basketball they are on top of each other…literally in football.

If the season is finishes…winning the World Series won’t be the same…don’t get me wrong…I don’t thing you or I would mind if the Pirates or Dodgers win…in this short year…anyone could.

    • I would say lets say the pirates get hot for 2 months and then win the World Series- that would be great- but it wouldn’t feel the same- it would be tainted whoever wins it.

    • I do agree with that..it won’t be the same…Everyone is in the running though. We both have seen some .500 teams play like gangbusters out of the gate or for half a season…and this is less than half.

    • I do fantasy baseball- it will make for an interesting year being so short- usually things don’t settle in as far as fantasy standings until the third month…there really won’t be a third month this year..

    • Part of me…I Ihave to admit just wanted to say it was a lost year…but I do miss the hell out of it so I’m happy they are playing. At least I can see 3 months of Mookie lol.
