Remembrance Of Things Past- The United States invades Grenada on October 25th, 1983.
I don’t think many American’s had ever heard of Grenada before October 1983, let alone being able to place it on a map. It all began when the government of Grenada was overthrown in a bloody coup by a Cuban trained military force. At the time there were 1000 American civilians in the tiny West Indies island country most of them being medical students.
President Reagan ordered the invasion to protect the American citizens that were in the country and also to stem the spread of Communism in the Caribbean. They invasion encountered resistance but was a success with the American civilians rescued, the Cuban troops ended up surrendering- and only 19 U.S. troop casualties. The entire operation took four days and was called Operation Urgent Fury. The military government of Hudson Austin was removed and the past government restored. In December of 1983 U.S. troops left Grenada.
