- Classes began today at the National University of Malaysia- with 192 undergraduate students at a temporary campus in Kuala Lumpur. Today the university is ranked as one of the highest-ranked research universities in the world with almost 27,000 students at its main campus in Bandar Baru Bangi.
- The National League of POW/MIA Families was incorporated by a group of wives of American servicemen who were listed as prisoners of war or missing in action in the Vietnam War. After the war more than 1600 servicemen were still listed as missing in action by the U.S. Department of Defense.
- Actor Glenn Quinn was born in Dublin, Ireland on this day- best know for roles in the television series Rosanne and Angel- Quinn died of a heroin overdose in 2002.
- Dying- Bishop Iuliu Hossu a Romanian Catholic cleric and Bishop of Cluj-Gherla since 1917- who had been detained by Romana’s Communist government since 1948. He was released from prison in 1955 but was then kept under house arrest.
