10 Albums That Influenced My Musical Taste: Day 3- Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band: “Trout Mask Replica.” “Trout Mask Replica” came out in 1969. In the late 1970’s I had read about it and was intrigued and bought it. Up until that point the music I enjoyed was pretty mainstream. Nothing too off the reservation. At least nothing like Captain Beefheart. I must admit on first listen I didn’t know what to think. I”d never heard anything like this -but back then when I bought an album I listened to it repeatedly no matter what the first impression was. It didn’t take long for this album to catch on with me. The key overall influence this album had was -it opened me up to more avant-garde music.
A good one.
I think I have pretty eclectic music taste, but this is bit too avant garde for me.
I had to go back and listen to this when I discovered CB in my youth.. Fit right into my wheelhouse. I love the guys music. CB really likes CB. Hans, you hear Wolf in his vocals like I do?
Yep had to have been heavily under the influence of the great Wolf. Yep I agree this isn’t a first time you hear it you love it album- but it grows on you.
He has more accessible music but that wasn’t going to get any air play either. Sounds like you got into the Captain before I did. I came via Zappa.
I got into Zappa after The Captain. Both great.
‘Bongo Fury’ is a fave of mine.
