It would have been 40 years ago – either in May or June 1980. I went over to my friend Dan’s house one morning to hang out. We were both at the time in limbo- having both dropped out of college. We were both bumming around mostly listening to music. That morning as I walked in the door I could see Dan was excited about something- he was usually excited about something. He burst out with “You have to hear this album I discovered.” We walked over to his turntable and he dropped the needle on this album- by someone I who I had heard of by name- but hadn’t heard any of his music- the artists name was John Prine. Within fifteen seconds I was hooked and a fan for life. The first song on side 1 was called “Fish And Whistle” and the album was called Bruised Orange. “I’ve been thinking lately about the people I meet….”

  1. Nice tune. While I know his name, I’m not familiar with John Prine’s music. It’s certainly sad he’s gone.

Jasckson Browne recently revealed he tested positive, though luckily, his symptoms appear to be mild. With so many other great artists being in their ’70s like Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Steve Winwood to name a few, you have to be worried who else the coronavirus may kill. And as Adam Schlesinger’s case shows, even if you’re younger, you can become a victim.

  2. Having listened to the song I’m thinking you MUST be a big Dylan fan. ‘Cause it’s a similar sound and feeling, right? Though Mr. Prine’s very upbeat here…

    • Yep- on my Mount Rushmore of favorites Bob Dylan is second only to The Beatles! When Prine first came out in the early 1970’s- he was one of the ‘new Dylan’s”- instead he turned into the only John Prine.
