Chicago- a pop rock group out of— Chicago- “Make Me Smile” was their first hit. From 1969-97 there would be many hits from this band- 50 Hot 100 singles, 34 made the Top 40 and out of those 34 – 20 of those made the Top 10- a pretty good batting average. I always liked the 70’s Chicago- but will pass on the rather lame easy listening group that Chicago became in the 80’s. They had 3 #1 hits: “If You Leave Me Now”- 1976, “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” 1982 and “Look Away” 1988.
I’m with you here. The early phase of Chicago was much more compelling than what they did in the ’80s.
It’s not that I outright hate their ballads and don’t have an issue to hear them – but not all the time. At some point, Chicago started to look like Peter Cetera’s backing band, and the ballads became too overwhelming.
It came a point in the 80s where to me the songs all started to sound the same. I agree they started to sound like Cetera’s banding band.
I love this song! Every bit of it. The arrangement rocks, the lyrics, and I love how he sings ❤
