Pop singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon was born Sharon Myers in Hazel, Kentucky. She had 16 Hot 100 singles from 1963-80 but only 2 made the Top 40- her biggest hit being “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” #4 in 1969. She has written over 600 songs including co-writing one of the biggest hits of the 1980’s “Bette Davis Eyes” which Kim Carnes took to #1. Back in her early days she toured with an outfit out of England named The Beatles. She was also a girlfriend of a guitarist named Jimmy Page- reportedly he wrote “Tangerine” after their relationship broke up in 1965.
A beautiful song from Jackie that I never heard before. Also, interesting anecdote about her inspiring the Led Zep song “Tangerine.” I can totally see that!
over 600 songs???
Jackie gave great support to the fledgling Byrds in 1964-65 prior to Mr. Tambourine Man.
Also, the melody of this song is similar to the Byrds’ unreleased “She Has A Way.” Jackie and the Byrds were definitely influencing each other at this point.
