All That Jazz: Essential Jazz Recordings: “Take Five”- Dave Brubeck Quartet.
The biggest selling jazz single ever and one of the most famous/ most known jazz recordings. Composed by Paul Desmond- who was Brubeck’s long time musical partner. “Take Five” was first recorded by Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1959- and upon re-release two years later in 1961- became a hit single- reaching #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1996.

Earlier in his career Dave Brubeck became the 2nd Jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time Magazine- the first was Louis Armstrong. Dave Brubeck would remain an active musician pretty much until the end- dying in December 2012 at the age of 91.
I love this kind of jazz and jazz improv as well, just don’t know a lot about it.
I never tire of Dave or this cut. Understated, hypnotic and it swings. Plus from what I can gather Dave was a special guy.
I recently saw there is a new biography on Dave- am interested in checking it out.
For sure. I’ll keep an eye out for that. I watched a doc ‘The Ambassadors’. Good segment on Dave and just keeps growing his status with me.
Did you see when he was honored at the White House? Fantastic.
I haven’t seen the doc- will look for it- thanks for the heads up.
