Billboard #1 Hits: #112: “I Get Around”- The Beach Boys. July 4, 1964. #1 for 2 weeks.

  • Single: “I Get Around”- The Beach Boys
  • Record Company- Capitol
  • Genre: Rock and Roll
  • Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love
  • Time: 2:12
  • B-side: “Don’t Worry Baby”
  • Album- Little Deuce Coupe
  • Grade: A+
  • Peaked at #1 for 2 weeks on US Billboard Hot 100. #7 on UK Singles Chart.

The Beach Boys first #1 hit- and the single was a great two sided hit- with “Don’t Worry Baby” on the b-side – personally I like “Don’t Worry Baby” even more. “I Get Around” was originally credited to Brian Wilson alone but in one of those famous Beach Boy lawsuits- Mike Love sued to get credit- he claimed to be the one who came up with “round round get around.”  Backing The Beach Boys on the recording were musicians from the famous Wrecking Crew including Hal Blaine on drums and Glen Campbell on guitar.  During the recording Murry Wilson- Brian/ Carl and Dennis’s father- and the group manager- was doing what he mastered- being an overbearing ass- and thought “I Get Around” was crap and how his sons had no talent- etc- so Brian stepped up and fired him!

  1. This is one of the great double sided singles. Don’t Worry Baby is the best one to me also. Probably my favorite over all…right next to God Only Knows.

    • Murry believed that he was the talent in the family. I think as The Beach Boys gained success they grew in confidence–and realized they could get rid of the old man. Supposedly an early beating by Murry cost Brian his hearing in one ear.
