- Former Major League Baseball star Rudy York died at the age of 56. York who had been battling lung cancer-died of bacterial pneumonia in Rome, Georgia. During his career York was a seven time All-Star- had hit 277 home runs with a .275 career batting average. He was a first baseman for the Detroit Tigers most of his career before finishing up his last couple years with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Athletics. He led the American League in home runs and RBI’s in 1943. After his career he would be a coach and managed the Boston Red Sox in 1959 as an acting manager for one game. After leaving baseball he was self-employed as a house painter.
