Hans Remembers- Monday February 2, 1970- 50 years ago.
- President Richard Milhous “Tricky Dick” Nixon sent in the annual budget proposal to the U.S. Congress and one of the things that took a big cut was America’s space program. The total budget to government programs was a little more than 200 billion dollars- the budget for 2020 is 23 times that- 4,700 billion- 4.7 trillion. Ouch.
- 1950 Nobel Prize winner in Literature- Bertrand Russell – noted British philosopher- war-activist and logician died at the age of 97.
- College basketball star- Pistol Pete Maravich of LSU became the first college player to score 3000 points- back then Freshman couldn’t play varsity- also there was no three point shot- and no shot clock. In his 3 years at LSU he averaged 44.2 points a game in the 83 games he played. Pistol Pete died at the age of 40 in 1988 from an undetected heart defect during a pick-up basketball game.
That’s an awesome reminder about Pete Maravich and the magnitude of his accomplishment.
Looking at those college stats- it doesn’t look like it was possible anyone could have scored like that.
Indeed. I remember my dad and his brothers being in awe of Maravich. Decades later, it’s even clearer how extraordinary he was.
