Born Virginia Wynette Pugh in Tremont, Mississippi- tragedy started earlier in her life- her father died of a brain tumor when she was only nine months old. Tammy Wynette was called the First Lady of Country Music. She had 73 charted hits on the Country chart with 20 #1 country hits. Her biggest hit on the Pop Hot 100 was “Stand By Your Man” #19 in 1969. In all she had 19 singles enter the Hot 100 Pop Chart but only “Stand By Your Man” made the Top 40. She was of course married to The Possum- country legend George Jones from 1969-75. She was married five times. She had a very difficult life which also included 15 major surgeries. She died in 1998 at 55 from a blood clot in her lungs.
“possum country legend” that cracks me up. Tammy did have a tough way to go of it. Maybe her next round through will be easier.
In today’s word the George and Tammy marriage would have been a tv reality show..
