The first demo of this song was recorded by Dionne Warwick. They gave the song to Ruby & The Romantics an R&B vocal group from Akron, Ohio lead by Ruby Nash. If the single by Ruby & The Romantics had failed the plan was to then give it a go with singer Jack Jones.
Ruby & The Romantics would have 8 Hot 100 Singles from 1963-65- “Our Day Will Come” was their first single- they would have two more Top 40 hits also in 1963 and that was it for the Top 40- so they can’t really be called ‘one hit wonders”- although this is probably the only song of theirs most people know. The version of “Our Day Will Come” that comes to my mind first is the Frankie Valli version which went to #11 in 1975.
I remember this one very well.
Good song, melody, singing, instruments.
I knew the Amy Winehouse cover, but had never heard the original. Nice!
