Ronnie Hawkins was born and raised in Arkansas but found success in Ontario, Canada after Conway Twitty suggested that he tour Canada. He had 3 Hot 100 singles from 1959-70 with one Top 40 hit- “Mary Lou” #26 1959. Hawkins is best remembered for his ability as a talent scout- Randy Bachman was a member of his back up group The Hawks- and then the most famous example were- Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson were members of his band- in 1964 they would leave and form their own little outfit- The Band.
“Down In The Alley” features the great Duane Allman on guitar- the single was produced by legendary producers Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd. The b-side:”Matchbox” is the Carl Perkins song that The Beatles covered -with George singing on The Beatles version. Ronnie Hawkins is still alive- at 85.

I bet you anything Ronnie was a real lady’s man back in the day, and just for the record *not* because of this song do I believe that. He has that twinkle in his eyes I bet the ladies loved.
So interesting that Solomon “Cry To Me” Burke is credited as one of the writers.
