I Love The Smell Of Punk In The Morning- “MTV- Get Off The Air”- Dead Kennedys.
“MTV- Get Off The Air”- written by Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys- appeared on their third album Frankenchrist- released in 1985. The Dead Kennedys were ahead of the curve on this one. MTV at least in my opinion was alright when it stuck to music. I still had some problems with the whole concept and how it was changing music. It was beginning to feel like the tail was wagging the dog. In the mid-80’s though MTV jumped the shark when they began adding their own television shows which had nothing at all to do with music. MTV is supposed to stand for Music Television right? It seemed to start with shows like The Real World- and it just got worse. I can’t believe their is an audience for the trash they put on. The Dead Kennedys say it best- video below.
Standing Ovation to the Dead Kennedys. I think MTV probably excluded some good bands without the right image…image has always been important in rock but it became bigger than the music.
Yes it seemed at that time how a band looked became more important than how a band sounded..
That was it. I believe that is how hair bands got so popular…at least it’s my guess.
good point- it certainly wasn’t the music.
LOL!
