“Psychedelic Shack” the first of three Top 40 hits in 1970 by The Temptations who had 53 Hot 100 and 38 Top 40 hits in their storied career. They also had 4 #1 hits- “My Girl” 1965, “I Can’t Get Next To YOU”1969, “Just My Imagination” 1971 and “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” 1972.
As the 1970’s began The Temptations went into the psychedelic soul stage of their career. This was a much welcomed move- abandoning the 1960’s Motown formula that at this point was starting to all sound the same. The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder all wanted to do their own thing at this point and all three would go on greater success in the 70’s than they even had in the 60’s. They still had The Funk Brothers backing them up. Keyboardist Earl Van Dyke said that the sessions for Psychedelic Shack was one of his favorites. The song is one of the first to feature sampling that a would become a hip-hop staple in the future. The Temptations had 14 #1 R&B hits but “Psychedelic Shack” fell short on that chart peaking at #2. All five of The Temptations sang at least one line in this hit. Certainly The Temptations at this point were inspired by Sly and The Family Stone.
