Born Canzata Staton in Hanceville, Alabama in 1940-Candi Staton had 10 Hot 100 singles from 1969-77 with 2 making the Top 40- she is best remembered for her biggest hit “Young Hearts Run Free” #20 in 1976. In the late 60’s she was a back up singer for blues and soul singer Clarence” Patches” Carter- they married in 1970, divorced in 1973. Since 1982 she has been a gospel singer and is a member of the Christian Music Hall of Fame. She has been nominated for four Grammy Awards. Staton who has been married six times is still living-she will be 80 in March.
