Billboard #1 Hits” #11- “Venus”- Frankie Avalon. #1  March 9, 1959 for 5 weeks. Released on Chancellor Records.  Written by Ed Marshall and Peter DeAngelis. Genre: Pop. Time: 2:20. B-side:”I’m Done.”  Grade: D-

The lame Frankie Avalon had 2 #1 hits in 1959- this one was the biggest one- it came in #4 for the year on the Billboard charts. The second #1 for Avalon would be the final #1 hit of 1959- “Why.” Why indeed.  1959 would be Avalon’s best year on the charts- with 4 Top 10 hits. His musical career petered out even before The Beatles had a chance to stamp it out. The British had much better taste “Venus” didn’t make the UK Singles Charts although it was #16 on their New Music Express chart.

  1. Frankie Avalon was the “Bobby Sherman” of his day, or was Bobby Sherman the “Frankie Avalon” of his day? Frankie had the advantage of being paired up with with every boy’s mad crush, Annette Funicello in those beach movies. Remember all of the beach movies being made back then? Between this crew, the Elvis movies, and the “B” biker movies set at the water there were a bunch. Must have had something to do with making movies in CA.

    • I missed those movies by a few years- and never caught up with them! I saw a few of the Elvis movies from the early 60’s and that was enough for me!

    • Oh yes, Disney made those Frankie and Annette (the former Mousketeer of The Mickey Mouse Club, which you probably also missed) movies, I think. Disney did other beach movies, now that I’m thinking about it.

    • Yes it is. Nowadays it’s The Marvel Universe, and I’ve just about had my fill of CGI! Have you seen the Sisters Brothers, with Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly? That was a pretty good recent western.

    • I agree with you on the current trend- enough is enough and its not even interesting. Haven’t seen Sisters Brothers- will have to look for it!
