Three Chords and The Truth: Essential Country Music Songs: “I Can’t Stop Loving You”- Ray Charles.  Don Gibson had 82 Hot 100 Country singles in his career but his two most famous songs and the ones that kept the money flowing in his bank account were the first three singles of his career- “Sweet Dreams”, “Oh Lonesome Me” and this one “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” Gibson always claimed that he wrote “Oh Lonesome Me” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You” on the same day. If so it was one of the more productive days anyone has ever had. The songs were recorded at the end of 1957. “Oh Lonesome Me” the a-side of the single went to #1 and the b-side “I Can’t Stop Loving You” #7. Both songs have been covered by a number of artists over 700 at last count but the most famous version of course is the one by Ray Charles who covered the song in 1962 on his great Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music.  Ray’s version would go to #1 on the pop charts in 1962 and spend 5 weeks there. A true masterpiece.

  1. While perhaps a bit lush, this is a beautiful rendition by Ray Charles. He was such a great vocalist. While I’m not saying it didn’t matter what he sang, I don’t recall having ever heard a bad Ray Charles tune.

    • Yes I think you could give Ray a nursery rhyme and he’d make something of it– kind of like what you could say of a great actor- he may have been involved in bad movies but he himself never had a bad performance.. I wish I had seen Ray in concert. I had chances but passed on them… dangit.
