  • DANIEL JOHNSTON: THE WHAT OF WHOM: 1982: INDIE ROCK: GRADE: A. APPLE:  In the past 7 days I didn’t listen to a single album while my wife and I were on vacation- while driving we had the radio on. When I got home the first things I wanted to listen to were some Daniel Johnston. In recent years I haven’t listened much to his music- a simple reason- it made me sad. It made me sad because I knew how he had been struggling the past decade or so. He’s no longer in pain. I feel I can listen again. The best of Daniel Johnston is the lo-fi music he made with a cassette tape/ cassette recorder- with no one backing him- just Daniel. Continued Story from 1985- is lo-fi but he’s backed by a band- the other two from today are just Daniel alone. Some great songs on all of them- Retired Boxer and The What Of Whom are outstanding. From 1981-85 he released 9 albums. The songs were just pouring out of him. Reportedly he has 1500 unreleased tapes.

    • I think that may have played a part in his not being as well known. I don’t know- I bet some of the best of it may be but I don’t know that.

  1. Yeah, if I could write half as much as him, I’d be extremely satisfied. But that goes for msjadeli too–talk about prolific, lol !!
I love the title “Retired Boxer,” for a song. Not the usual thought or inspiration one has to write music, is it? What is the feeling of Retired Boxer…melancholy or something lighter?
