This Must Be The Place: ‘Dirty Water:- The Standells. We are in Boston today- and when thinking of songs about Boston the first that comes to mind is “Dirty Water” by The Standells. The Standells were a garage band from– Los Angeles. “Dirty Water” was a hit in 1966- and has since become a Boston sports classic- being played at Red Sox, Bruins games. The Standells ever appeared at a few World Series that the Red Sox played in- playing “Dirty Water.”

  1. Good song, never really listened to enough of the lyrics to see which dirty water they were talking about. That’s got to be one of the most hilarious videography I’ve seen. The camera person must have had a crush on the drummer. You’re seeing some wonderful places on your vaca!

    • I don’t know- that song is over 50 years old- I hope its cleaner now than it was then- the Cayahoga River in Cleveland is the one that caught on fire 50 years ago- and its been cleaned up… We changed plans today- we were going to go into downtown Boston- but went to Concord instead and visited the homes of Emerson, Hawthorne, the Alcotts and of course Walden Pond! It was a great day.

    • We ended up not even bothering with Boston- We’d been there before. Mass transit can get you around but yesterday morning we just decided to do Concord. It’s far enough into the suburbs that traffic wasn’t a problem etc.. dreading that long drive home today. The worst part of the vacation is going home after all the fun is over.

  2. Dude, you’re in Boston and you’re not thinking of Tom Shultz?!?

    What blasphemy is this?

    Just kidding.
I’ve noticed that the music you closely identify with is about a generation before you and that’s interesting.

Because you were a teen in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

But you mostly write about music from before that time.

    • That is true- I was born ten years too late! My favorite group The Beatles- the events that fascinate me are ones I can’t remember or barely remember…. I don’t know if that is odd or not. I am certainly not into the 21st century.
