EVERY ENTRY INTO THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 SINGLES CHART- PART 98

Every Entry Into The Billboard Hot 100 Single Chart- 1969- Part 98. Today’s three singles entered the Hot 100 on June 14, 1969- ‘Yesterday, When I Was Young.”- Roy Clark, “The Days of Sand and Shovels”- Bobby Vinton and “Moonflight”- Vik Venus.

307. “Yesterday, When I Was Young”- Roy Clark. Dot. Country. Written by Charles Aznavour. B-side: ” Just Another Man.” Roy Clark is best remembered as the co-host of Hee- Haw with Buck Owens from 1969-86- but he was a great musician and successful country music performer. In his career he had 6 Hot 100 entries on the pop chart- this being his only Top 40 hit- peaking at #19 and spending 10 weeks in the Hot 100. It was written by the French actor/ singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour-the French Frank Sinatra. The song was baseball great Mickey Mantle’s favorite song. He felt it told his life story- about how he wasted the greatest days of his life. He asked Roy Clark to sing the song at his funeral and Clark did just that. Grade: A+.

308. “The Days Of Sand And Shovels”- Bobby Vinton. Epic. Pop. Written by Doyle Marsh and George Reneau. B-side: So Many Lonely Girls.” The second of two hits Bobby Vinton had in 1969- both peaked at #34- this one spent 8 weeks on the chart. Grade: C

309. “Moonflight”- Vik Venus. Buddah. Novelty. Written by Barry Siegal. B-side: “Everybody’s On Strike.” A novelty song- Vik Venus was really radio personality Jack Spector who would die of a heart attack while on the air at WHLI- in Long Island in 1994. The record was produced by Lewis Merenstein- who also was the producer of the greatest album of all time- Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks.” “Moonflight” peaked at #38 and spent 10 weeks in the Hot 100. Grade: B

  1. I can’t even imagine how sad it must have been at Mickey Mantle’s funeral with Roy playing this song at it. It’s a one-in-a million. It reminds me of “When I Was 17” by Frank Sinatra. I remember that Bobby Vinton song and that one reminds me of Bobby Goldsborough’s “Honey,” and both good songs as to twanging the heartstrings.
