Every Entry Into The Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart- 1969- Part 76. Today’s singles- the first two entered the Hot 100 on May 3, 1969- “Marley Purt Drive” -Jose Feliciano and “I Want To Love You Baby”-Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson. The other two were the highest debuts on the chart May 10- “Get Back”- The Beatles with Billy Preston and “Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet” Henry Mancini, His Orchestra and Chorus.

229. “Marley Purt Drive”- Jose Feliciano. RCA. Pop. Written by The Bee Gees. B-Side: “Old Turkey Buzzard.” Feliciano’s first two singles were Top 40 hits in 1968- the biggest being #3 “Light My Fire.” He would place ten more singles in the Hot 100 but none of them would rise higher than #50. “Marley Purt Drive” peaked at #70 and spent 4 weeks on the chart. Grade: B

 

230. ” I Want To Love You Baby”-Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson. SSS International. Soul. Written by Don Hill. B-side: “We Got Our Bag.” Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson had a Top 40 hit earlier in 1969 with “Soulshake” #37- “I Want To Love You Baby” didn’t enjoy as much success reaching #81 and spending 4 weeks on the chart. Grade: B-

231. “Get Back” – The Beatles with Billy Preston. Apple. Rock. Written by John Lennon-Paul McCartney: B-Side “Don’t Let Me Down.” While credited to Lennon- McCartney this was a Paul written song. The B-side “Don’t Let Me Down”- also cracked the Top 40 reaching #35. “Get Back” which features Billy Preston on the electric piano- went to #1 and spent 5 weeks there- and 12 weeks on the chart. Grade: A+

232. “Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet”- Henry Mancini, His Orchestra and Chorus. RCA Victor. Pop. Written by Nino Rota. B-Side: The Windmills Of Your Mind.” The top two entries onto the Hot 100 on May 10th- both ended up at #1- “Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet” spent 2 weeks on the top of the charts and 14 weeks on the chart. It was the theme from the Romeo and Juliet starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. Henry Mancini would have a total of 15 Hot 100 singles- with 7 making the Top 40-his only Top 10 was “Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet.” He would be the winner of 4 Oscars and 20 Grammy’s for his work during his career. Grade: B+

  1. Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson’s single sounds like many other soul songs combined…but yet I still listened to the complete song and enjoyed it. It’s hard to mess up good Soul music.
