The Sounds of Summer- Day 41 of 95. “Surfin’ U.S.A.- The Beach Boys. Early in their careers The Beach Boys gave the world the impression that they were all surfers- their first single “Surfin”- #75 in 1962, their second single was “Surfin’ Safari” their first hit which went to #14 also in 1962 and then their second Top 40 hit in 1963 “Surfin’ USA” #3. In reality only one of The Beach Boys surfed -drummer Dennis Wilson. The Beach Boys would move on to subjects other than surfing but the image remained. The writing credits for “Surfin’ U.S.A.” go to Brian Wilson the Beach Boys creative genius and the great Chuck Berry -since Wilson put his surf related lyrics to the music of Chuck’s “Sweet Little Sixteen.” “Surfin’ U.S.A.”is included on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
