The Sounds Of Summer- Day 27 of 95- ‘Margaritaville”- Jimmy Buffett. I mentioned I believe in Day 1 of this series that no artist to me symbolized summer to me like The Beach Boys. While I would still rank The Beach Boys at #1 as far as summer and music go- another artist that fits that category slipped my mind- Jimmy Buffett. I have only went to one Jimmy Buffett concert back in the early 90s but I can’t imagine a Jimmy Buffett concert in say early February. I have noticed that when he tours its always a summer tour. “Margatitaville” would be his anthem- his signature song without question. It was a single in 1977 off of his Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes album- and was his biggest chart success going to #8 in the Hot 100.
Buffett has made a very successful career out of his ‘island escapism” attitude and music. He has not only been a successful musician but has taken this idea and has a couple of restaurant chains and has written successful books. He tapped in to an audience out there that still keeps coming back for more. While I do like Buffett’s music- he has to be considered the father of some of this god awful country music that now pollutes the airwaves- these country singers who in my mind- took what Buffett was doing and have piggybacked his ideas into success with the summer- party- we’re all having a good time at the beach type music- third rate country music at best. “Margaritaville” though is a gem and a summer classic.
