149. ” In The Still Of The Night”- Paul Anka. RCA Victor. Pop. Written by Fred Parris.  B-Side: Pickin’ Up The Pieces.””In The Still Of The Night” by Paul Anka is a cover of the great Five Satins doo-wop classic from 1956. Paul Anka born in Ottawa, Ontario had 53 Hot 100 singles from 1957-83. 32 of them were Top 40 hits and he had 3 #1’s- his first single “Diana” in 1957, “Lonely Boy” 1959 and a single that is on the Mount Rushmore of Worst Songs of All-Time {You’re} Having My Baby”- 1973. Gag. “In The Still Of The Night” peaked at #64 and spent 6 weeks on the chart. Two songs that Anka had something to do with that probably made him the most money- he wrote the Tonight Show Theme and he wrote the American version of a French hit- titled “My Way”- which became Frank Sinatra’s signature song- which ironically entered the charts a week after this Anka single did. Grade: D

150. “Born Again”- Sam & Dave, Atlantic. Soul. Written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes. B-side: “Get It” I discovered Sam & Dave from The Blues Brother movie. If I remember correctly Jake and Elwood Blues were driving through the night and “Soothe Me” was on the radio. I had to find out who did that song- and then I went out and bought the Best of Sam & Dave. Those guys were great. I can’t believe their lack of success on the pop chart- all together they had 13 Hot 100 singles with only 3 making the Top 40. “Soul Man’ #2 1967 was their biggest hit. “Born Again” was the last charting single on the Pop chart- it peaked at #92- spending 3 weeks on the charts. The album “The Best of Sam & Dave” highly recommended. Grade: B

151. “My Way”- Frank Sinatra. Reprise. Pop. Written by Claude Francois, Jacques Revaux and Paul Anka. B-side: “Blue Lace.” Paul Anka heard this French song by Claude Francois while in vacation in France and bought the rights to the song and then re-wrote the French song in English with Frank Sinatra in mind. It would become Sinatra’s signature song- although he didn’t really like the song. Frank’s daughter Tina wrote “He didn’t like it. That song stuck and he couldn’t get it off his shoe. He always thought that song was self-serving and self-indulgent.” Grade: A+

  1. So Paul Anka got royalties every time the Tonight Show theme song came on? If so, DANG. So weird about “My Way” and Frank in the charts a week apart.

    • It almost looks like I was manipulating the order but I have the order they came onto the charts in 1969 and just follow it down the line–and they came on in that order!… yes that’s not a bad day’s work-coming up with the Tonight Show theme I wonder how much $ has brought into Anka’s bank account over the years?
