The Beatles Cover of the Day- ” I Want To Hold Your Hand.” – Al Green. Al Green covered The Beatles first #1 hit in America- “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in 1969 -it was released as a single but failed to make the charts. It is included on the 40th anniversary edition of Al’s “Green Is Blues” album which came out in 1969- he also covers “Get Back” on that album. Al takes The Beatles giant hit and does it in his own way and it is sensational. Paste Magazine a decade back listened it as the greatest Beatles cover. Like the best Beatles covers- he doesn’t follow The Beatles formula- he does his own thing. Not saying it is better than the original but it is a version of it I enjoy. It certainly doesn’t sound as innocent as the original. At this point Al Green was early in his career- “Green Is Blues” was his second album -it wouldn’t be until 1971 that he would break into the Top 40.

  1. Never heard this before…that is brilliant. It shows how great of a melody it is that it will work in soul…and work well.

  2. A good cover, to the point it is an entirely new song, except for the words. A big “E for Effort” for finding it. The Sparks’ version is an obvious cover, slowed down to make it more romantic, but devoid of the joy and happiness the Beatles gave it. An “adequate” release, no doubt, but not a chart-climber for me.

  3. We think we can hear shades of Otis Redding in there too. A great cover, Hans – one we’d never heard before!
