THE BEATLES COVER OF THE DAY- “LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS”- ELTON HERCULES JOHN

The Beatles Cover of the Day is “Lucky In The Sky With Diamonds- By Elton John.  “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” was written by John Lennon and appeared on The Beatles iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. The Beatles didn’t release it or any song from Sgt. Pepper as a single. With Elton John now being on his long Farewell Tour- and a movie out about him at the moment “Rocket Man”- I thought today I would feature his version of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”

In 1974 Elton John recorded “Lucy In Sky With Diamonds” as a single and it featured John Lennon on backing vocals and guitar- John was credited under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O’Boogie. The single went to #1 on the singles charts in the United States and Canada and #10 in the United Kingdom. It was Elton’s third #1 single in the US.

  1. Elton’s version is good but I still prefer the Beatles version of it…probably in the minority. His version doesn’t have that electronic organ sound that opens the Beatles version up.

  2. Back then, Sir Elton, one of the great piano men in pop, rocked a lot more than for last 30 years or so. This version is pretty good, but his one I really like is “Pinball Wizard.” While I dig The Who’s original, I always felt it had a somewhat odd premature ending. In that regard, John’s extended version makes more sense to me.

  3. There’s a staccato, cut-off kind of sound with Elton’s, isn’t there? It was annoying me while listening. I think the Beatles’ version is smoother somehow……hmm…….
