1969 Song of the Day- “The Worst That Could Happen”- by Brooklyn Bridge. Yesterday I did “Wedding Bell Blues” by 5th Dimension- today another wedding song. “The Worst That Could Happen” was written by the great songwriter Jimmy Webb and was originally recorded by the 5th Dimension- in 1967. The single by Brooklyn Bridge peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1969. Jimmy Webb wrote the song about a relationship with a woman named Susan- he got a couple other songs from that relationship- it also inspired the huge hits MacArthur Park and By The Time I Get To Phoenix. “The Worst That Could Happen” was the only hit song by Brooklyn Bridge whose lead singer was named Johnny Maestro. After 9-11 the simple minded Clear Channel put this on the list of songs not to be played on their stations- the version by Brooklyn Bridge- not the 5th Dimension’s version- both versions were note for note the same. The morons probably weren’t aware of the 5th Dimension’s doing the song.
