1969 Song of the day- “Hair’ by The Cowsills. The song “Hair” as written for the 1968 musical named “Hair.” It was written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni. The most successful cover version of the song was released in March 1969 by The Cowsills. The Cowsills took the song to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Cowsills from Newport Rhode Island- were a group of brothers-and from 1968-1972 they were one of the most popular touring acts in the country averaging 200 concerts a year. The Cowsills were the inspiration for 1970’s The Partridge Family television show. Back in the 1969’s early 70’s growing your hair long was considered an act of rebellion, a revolutionary act. To be a hippie you had to have your hair long and of course also look unkempt and of course smell or at least the ones I remember were like that.
