1969 Song of the Day is- “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” by Nina Simone. The song was written by Nina Simone with lyrics Weldon Irvine. The song was written in memory of Simone’s friend the author Lorraine Hansberry the author of the play Raisin In The Sun who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 34 in 1965. The song would go on to become a Civil Rights Movement anthem. As a single it went to #8 on the R&B charts and #76 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song would be covered by Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway and many others -including Elton John.

  1. I was surprised to learn it was a Simone tune. I knew it from the no 5 1970 hit by ‘Bob and Marcia’, where it is has the Trojan reggae groove.

  2. And I definitely didn’t know it was written for the author of Raisin in the Sun who died so tragically young.
