The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is- Dead Flowers. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards -Dead Flowers in the penultimate song on The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album- and is my favorite song on the album- and one of my favorite songs by The Rolling Stones. At this point in time Keith was hanging out with his friend Gram Parsons-and that country influence shines through in this song. Dead Flowers is more Keith’s territory than Mick’s-although Mick does sing it. The lyrics are dark with the reference to shooting up heroin. Every year I associate the Kentucky Derby with this song ‘ making bets on Kentucky Derby day.” Over the years the song has been covered by a number of artists- my favorite version is -Steve Earle- who I’ve seen do the song a number of times in concert- he’s always good for a Beatles, Stones or Dylan cover.

The song was used in the credits of the big cult classic- The Big Lebowski- former Rolling Stone manager Allen B . Klein originally wanted $150,000 for the song to be used- but agreed to let them have it for nothing after seeing the scene in the movie where The Dude says ” I hate the F-ing Eagles.” One thing I would have agreed with Allen Klein on.
