1969 Song of the Day is- Shangri-La by The Kinks. Shangri-La written by The Kinks frontman Ray Davies appears on their concept album Arthur. The song- and the album was inspired by the Davies sister and her husband moving to Australia and the band visiting them there while on a 1964 tour. They’re sister and brother-in law lived in a semi- detached home ‘designated community. ” It took a while but the experience stayed with Ray and 5 years later the song- and the album. The concept for the album was the British class system. This is a great song- the best on Arthur which is a very good album- but it wasn’t a successful single- charting only in The Netherlands.

Excellent tune, really tells it like it is. Some things never change.
