1969 Song of the Day- “Rainy Night In Georgia”- Brook Benton. Brook Benton had 24 Top 40 hits and to tell you the truth the only one I knew was Rainy Night In Georgia- and it was his final hit. Most of his hits came in the late 50’s-early to mid 60’s.  He had 49 singles that made the Hot 100. Then around the time of the British Invasion he disappeared off the pop charts. This was his comeback hit- written by Tony Joe White [ who just passed away in October} The Brook Benton cover was a hit in 1970 but it qualifies as 1969 since it came out on his Brook Benton Today album released at the end of 1969. This song was an instant hit for Benton rising to #3 on the charts. It is not only an outstanding song to begin with but a wonderful performance by Benton.  Rainy Night In Georgia has been covered by many artists but they may as well give up no one can sing it like Brook Benton did. Benton never had another hit on the Billboard Pop charts and he passed away far to young at the age of 56 of pneumonia.

  1. A perfect song. I love his voice, and his timing is perfect, you can tell he has sung a lot of songs. I need to learn more about Brooke Benton, as this is the only song of his I’ve heard.

  2. Benton helped me discover my adolescent soul with this song. I hadn’t yet been to Georgia, never took my place in a boxcar and never played the guitar, but as most tweens do, I did believe I was in love. Benton voiced the pain of it for me. I played the 45 over and over. Lol, good thing my mother liked it.
