Hans Worst Hits of the 80s– “Never Gonna Give You Up”- Rick Astley 1987. Rick Astley had other hits in the US other than this one but they all came after this. Never Gonna Give You Up was his first single and it was a world wide smash- going #1 in 24 different countries. You couldn’t escape it- and it was/ is awful. One of the worst insults I’ve heard is around that time I was hanging out with my friends Dan and Helmet- and Helmet picked up a guitar and played a new song he had written. Dan said- jokingly “You sound like Rick Astley”– at first Helmet smiled then he realized who he was being compared to. {Helmet also years earlier- I played him Donna Summer’s “Cold Love”- told him ahead of time it was The Jam- he loved it for 15 seconds before Donna began singing- then of course he automatically hated it..} Anyway- Rick Astley’s song I couldn’t name another Rick Astley song- I think this one was part of the reason I quiet listening to pop music stations.Terrible video too. I see he had another #1 Together Forever in 1988 maybe if I heard it I’d remember it- but the title doesn’t ring a bell. Overall he had 7 Top 40 hits with 5 reaching the Top 10 so no one hit wonder here.
HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVES-ALONG WITH WHEN SMOKEY SINGS
It IS a terrible video. And the song may be questionable (but it was kind of catchy). But overall that…. he had a great voice, didn’t he?! I think I was completely stunned when I finally saw who was actually singing that song. It was like, “Say what now?!”
You really are a music snob Hans. I’m with trebellia here, as I love this song (along with ‘When Smokey Sings’)
I’m not sure how my kids were made aware of this song, but they had a field day with it through memes, gifs, etc. He was one of their laughingstocks for sure.
Yes, my son and his friends had a ball with it…sending a link under a different name and having this pop-up…to out cheesy the other.
lol! Poor Rick Astley
lol he will live…
heading out to GR now for volunteering. see you later…
have a good one.
thanks
Tell Jerry and Betty if you run into them- Hans said Hi.
I’m not volunteering at the GRF Museum, or I would 🙂
I have been to a number of presidential sites- libraries- museums- homes- graves but I haven’t been to the Ford library -museum. Need to make it there someday. I am into reading on the presidents- and I’ve read more than once that – Ford was -the most athletic of our presidents and the nicest guy of all the presidents. That was of course before Trump was in office..LMAO.
lmao. I remember he got a bad rep as being clumsy. Remember those skits on SNL where Chevy Chase played him and kept falling? I’ve only been in that library while Art Prize is going on as GR open up many of their public spaces (and private businesses) for it. GRF isn’t of much interest to me and neither is the current sitting buffoon!
Ford was average at best -but he was the perfect personality to replace Milhous after Watergate.
Milquetoast after Milhous? Make sense. Have you ever read Michael Moore’s memoir, “Here Comes Trouble”? I bet you would love it.
Didn’t know Moore had a memoir. Only know his documentaries.
Not sure if it is a memoir or an autobiography, as I don’t know the difference, but yes, he wrote it a few years back. It’s got a lot of political stuff in it, including about the Nixon years.
I bet that they got Rickrolled…
Rickrolled? Ok now I need a definition (only if G-rated!)
You are said to be Rickrolled if you somehow got tricked to view the video of this song. One way to achieve this is to disguise a link to the said video and make it seems to pertain to other things.
One professor at a math convention I attended several years ago told everyone to focus on the screen. Once he got everyone’s attention, this vid was played.
OMG my own kids Rickrolled me way back when. You reminded me of it. LMAO
That is funny!
It’s only good for Rickrolling…
It’s not that bad. He has a nice voice, tho, he doesn’t look like he belongs to the voice.
