HANS WORST HITS OF THE 80’S- ‘START ME UP”– THE ROLLING STONES

Hans Worst Hits of the 80’s- “Start Me Up”- The Rolling Stones. OK OK before I go to far on this- it is not a terrible song- it doesn’t really belong on the Worst Hits- list- but while I was walking this morning and thinking of a song to write about today- this came to mind for one reason- it is the single most overplayed song in the history of history!  Recently I was in the car with the radio on and one of those I Heart radio spots came up about what is the most popular song by The Rolling Stones according to the listeners- Satisfaction I think was #3, Beast Of Burden #2 and #1- you guessed it “Start Me Up.” When the song came out in 1981 on the Tattoo You album- I liked it a lot- it was a natural for every Stones concert set list- they often start their shows with this song. When they played at the Super Bowl Halftime in 2006 it was one of the three songs they played. This song is played to death. I can’t think of a more overplayed song- even more overplayed than Free Bird or Stairway To Heaven or The Joker. As a single it went to #2 in 1981. The songs that kept it from the #1 slot? Arthur’s Theme by the hard rocking Christopher Cross and Private Eyes by Hall &Oates. Again back then I liked the song. Now if it comes on the radio I reach fast to change the station. I will say this I have probably heard- since its a much older song- Satisfaction just as often but I never get tired of Satisfaction. A truly great song you never get tired of. This is a pretty good song beaten to death.

  1. The Tattoo You tour was my first time to see a Stones concert, so the time of this song is meaningful to me. But I’ve always considered this song to be lame. They have many better songs. I simply don’t get the hype.

  2. Oh my gosh, Hans, I about fell over when I saw you chose one of your beloved RS songs as a worst of. I thought you were going to say it was because of the album cover of the hairy foot in the high heel. I can’t argue with your rationale!
