I read the news today- oh boy!- the day was Thursday January 16, 1969–
- America had beat them to it-the docking of two spaceships in space now the Soviets had done it. The Soviets had sent up Soyuz 4 with one cosmonaut on January 14th, followed by Soyuz 5 the next day with three cosmonauts – on this day the two ships docked.
- Boxing champion Roy Jones Jr was born on this day in Pensacola, Florida. Jones first came to prominence when he won the silver medal at the Seoul Olympics 1988. Jones would turn professional and win multiple World Championships in four weight classes. He would be another boxer who hasn’t known when to quit- his most recent fight was February of 2018 at 49. His career record 66-9 with 47 wins by knock out.
- A disturbing scene in Prague, Czechoslovakia’s Wenceslas Square- a student named Jan Palach set himself on fire to protest the Soviet Union’s invasion of the country. Palach would die three days later. His death would spark nationwide student protests against the Soviet occupation.
- If you wanted to take a ride of a fast train- try Penn Central’s Metroliner- on this date 50 years ago they inaugurated service between Union Station in Washington, D.C. and Penn Station in New York City. The train reached speeds of 110 miles per hour on its 225 mile journey- it was the fastest train in the US at that time. The trip took 2 1/2 hours. The train operated until 2006.
