Han’s Worst Hits of the 90’s- “The Sign”- Ace of Base- awful and annoying. This ended up being the #1 charted song on the Billboard 1994 year end chart. Maybe it’s just me but I hated this fake reggae style crap. Idolator in 2014 ranked it the #1 Pop Single of 1994, Rolling Stone had it at #42 of the best songs of the 1990’s. Maybe its more of an indictment of 1990’s music that it would make any list of best songs. Lada Gaga and Katy Perry have named Ace Of Base as influences.
Ace Of Base was a Swedish band. They had three Top 10 hits in the early 90s – All That She Wants #2, The Sign which spent 6 weeks at #1 and Don’t Turn Around #4. I don’t even remember the other two- but The Sign I certainly remember all too well. It sold 9 million copies. The song is about a troubled relationship. All I can remember of the song lyrics is
I saw the sign
And it opened up my eyes
I saw the sign
repeated over and over and over. I may be in a minority but I think this is one of the worst hits ever.
Complete turd of a song
I am glad someone agrees with me- I was afraid I was missing something on this.
The “live is DemANDing without underSTAANding” bit always really bugged me
My -ex liked this group and its videos, and no he isn’t my -ex because of musical differences 😉
I thankfully don’t remember it. It sounds like they were trying to make a hit…out of nothing. Very slick very corporate.
It was around this time that I gave up pop Top 40 radio.
I was going to say it sounds modern…
I used the hear about how they were the 1990s ABBA. They’re lacking the melodic and harmonic sophistication.
Abba I like a lot.. these folks I don’t think so. They do have one thing in common- Sweden. It would be like comparing a band from England to The Beatles or Stones -because they were from England..
I love this song.
Horrible song yes, but worse than Sugar Ray’s Every Morning or Aqua’s Barbie Girl? 🙂
I don’t remember those two songs you mentioned- will have to look them up..
Brace yourself for musical saccharine. 🙂
thanks for the warning!!
