ALBUMS

  • TAYLOR SWIFT: REPUTATION: 2017: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Swift’s latest album has had 5 Top 20 singles- including a #1 in Look What You’ve Made Me Do. The other singles being End Game, Ready For It, Gorgeous and Delicate. I have all of her previous albums but it took me a year to even get this out of the library for some reason. First impression is it’s not as good as her previous albums but it’s pretty good. Last month on the way to the Bob Dylan concert my friend Helmet and I were discussing music and he brought her up in a negative way. When I pressed him on it he couldn’t name even one of her songs. He said he’s never heard of her. I think he has to have- I don’t know how you could be alive in the past dozen years and not at least overhear a Taylor Swift song. I am not a big fan of the pop music of today- or recent times but I think Swift is pretty good. This album feels like she is following trends instead of setting them or doing her own thing. And at 15 songs it is too long. My favorite song is the last one New Years Day which isn’t overproduced like so many songs on this is.

  • DWIGHT YOAKAM: 3 PEARS: 2012: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Dwight hasn’t been all that active with albums of new material this century-but this is an outstanding one- which was also his highest charting album on the Top 200 peaking at #18- it went to #3 on the country charts- all well deserved. This was his first album of new material since 2005’s Blame The Vain. A Heart Like Mine- was produced by Beck. His most rocking album since his debut.

  1. Having chaperoned a teenager to four Tay Tay concerts, I can say with authority that she is a talented singer-songwriter-performer. I started enjoying her music and concerts, until 2015, when she supposedly hired a songwriter–the guy who wrote for Britney Spears and the like. She went pop the way some pop stars go country. I’ll start paying attention again when she starts writing, recording and performing her own songs again.

    • I tend to agree- the last two albums seem to be let’s follow the trends- she is a fine songwriter on her own- sacrifice some album sales to be a real artist.

    • The trendy stuff seems to have successfully vaulted her into pop status. I don’t begrudge her for it. But I’m hoping the pop phase soon runs its course and then she’ll want to go back to her own thing. I think she’ll have a really long, satisfying career if she does it with her own songs.
